How to Upload Music to YouTube Music

As one of the largest music streaming platforms in the world, knowing how to upload songs to YouTube Music could turn you into the next big hit. But as a new artist, it can be difficult to get started.
Here's everything you need to know.

1. Partner with a music distributor

First, you're going to need a distributor: A company that helps independent musicians get their tunes on streaming platforms, including YouTube Music for artists.
In general, it isn't possible to create an Official Artist Channel on your own—and the same goes for other streaming services. Fortunately, distributors like SoundOn have already established partnerships with these companies, and they'll handle the technical aspects necessary to get your songs into listener's hands (and ears!).
Don't worry; you can still retain 100% ownership of your songs and keep up to 100% of your earnings depending on the distributor you choose.

2. Upload your music to your distributor

Now that you've chosen the music distributor you'd like to work with, it's time to put your songs out into the world.
But first, double-check the following standards to ensure YouTube doesn't flag your music.

  • It is in the right format (FLAC or WAV)
  • It doesn't contain content that is already copyrighted
  • The metadata is correct (i.e., song name, artist name, etc.)
  • You've uploaded a cover image (JPEG/PNG greater than 1600px x 1600px and smaller than 10mb)

If these are all taken care of, you can begin your upload!
To do so using SoundOn, you’ll follow these steps:

  1. Get set up: Log in or register for an account, complete the onboarding process, and sign your contract.
  2. Upload your music: Click “Upload” (top left corner), choose your Audio File, and fill in the rest of your track’s information.
  3. Select your platforms: Click “Next to select platform” (bottom right corner) to be taken to the platform selection page. Check the box next to each in-house, social, and streaming service you wish to release your music to and click “Submit”.

3. Create an Official YouTube Artist channel

Knowing how to upload songs to YouTube Music is just the first step—now comes the fun part!
Claiming your Official YouTube Artist channel is for more than bragging rights. Becoming part of this program grants you access to features like Analytics for Artists, organized content (i.e., playlists, album listings, etc.), promotional content, and more.
However, you're going to need to meet YouTube's requirements first. They include:

  • Having at least 1 official YouTube music release published by a music distributor (which you've already done)
  • Owning an existing YouTube channel dedicated to your music
  • Adhering to YouTube's Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, and Copyright policies

You'll also have to complete at least one of the following:

  • Become a YouTube Partner
  • Distribute your music using a partner from the YouTube Services Directory for Music Partners
  • Work with a label network that collaborates with a YouTube Partner Manager
  • Collaborate with a YouTube Partner Manager

4. Promote your music to find new listeners

Though knowing how to upload your music to YouTube Music is crucial for reaching listeners, your promotional activities are just as important.
It's no secret that social media is the place to push your songs, which is why distributors like SoundOn provide opportunities to pitch your music to TikTok playlists, generate pre-save links, engage in creator marketing, and more.

Conclusion

YouTube Music for artists is a great platform for growing your fanbase and connecting with new listeners. As the service continues to evolve, you'll want to choose a trusted distribution partner who can guide you towards success.
